Orchestra of Samples is our live project and album based on sampling recording sessions we’ve filmed with over 200 hundred musicians around the world, splicing them together to create a digital supergroup of international artists who never met but play together.

Exploring a new form of collaboration, we’ve spent years filming improvised recordings sessions with artists playing all manner of instruments around the world.  As well as drummers, guitarists, violinists, flutists and others, we filmed singers in Bhutan, musicians playing bagpipes made from whole goats, the futuristic sounds of the French Baschet instruments, Stereolab singer Laetitia Sadier, Motörhead original drummer Lucas Fox and Björk collaborator Henry Dagg - recording his Sharpsichord that he performed with on her Biophilia project.

Recording session with Cyril Atef
Ultra pleased that renowned drummer Cyril Atef wanted to be involved with Orchestra of Samples, we took up the invitation to his studio and headed over to record a session while we were in Paris in June.
Drummer, percussionist and composer, Cyril was born in Berlin, but grew up in Los Angeles, where he played in a number of punk bands in the 1980’s.  He moved to Paris in the mid-90’s forming the now well known electronic act Bumcello with French cellist and bassist Vincent Ségal.  The duo have since released six albums and in 2006 won the Victoires de la Musique award for Electronic Artist of the Year.

Cyril has collaborated with the National Orchestra de Barbès and artists like Brigitte Fontaine, Alain Bashung and French rock star M (Matthieu Chedid), notably o
n his rock documentary Le tour de M.  Cyril's also performed on soundtracks including Polanski's The Ghost Writer and vampire saga Twilight: New Moon. And last year he composed the music for director Djo Tunda Wa Munga's gangster film Viva Riva.
In 2008 Cyril formed his side project CongopunQ with dancer Monsieur Cong, in which he sings and plays all the instruments. Mixing African trance with electro grooves, he describes the project as a "Dadaist experience"!  And as if all this wasn’t enough, Cyril recently formed psychogroove rock band A Freak in Space with guitarist Eric Löhrer and bassist Hilaire Penda. We saw the band play live the night before our morning recording - so little sleep was had all round!  For our session together, Cyril played a range of drums, including the Tamtam D’appel (log drum) and he also played the Likembe (thumb piano). Huge thanks to Manu from Canal 93!
